According to the WHO, the normal pH of human semen is in the range of 7.2 – 7.8. The seminal fluid is a combination of secretions from the seminal vesicles, prostate and bulbo-urethral glands, which are responsible for maintaining optimal semen pH. Low/high pH values are an important indicator of male fertility and can be useful to Andrologists. Values outside the normal range may be indicative of pathology of the male reproductive tract.

• Lower semen volume with high pH may be indicative of pathology of the prostate gland
• Low semen pH may be indicative of blockage of the seminal vesicles resulting in deficiency of seminal vesicle fluid
• High pH can also result from prolonged exposure of semen sample to ambient air post collection
